TOPEKA -- The Topeka Fire Department honored the retirement of Deputy Fire Chief George V. Rocha during a special Retirement Ceremony earlier today, at the department’s 324 SE Jefferson Street Administrative Offices.
Deputy Chief Rocha began his career as a member of the Topeka Fire Department on November 13, 1976. He has worked his way up through the ranks and served the department as:
Firefighter 3rd – 1st Class - (November 1976 – November 1979)
Advanced Firefighter and Apparatus Operator/Drive –
(November 1979 – May 1987)
Company Officer i.e. Lieutenant and Captain
(January 1993 – January 1999)
Battalion Chief and Shift Commander –
(September 2005 – December 2005)
On September 5, 2009 newly appointed Fire Chief Allen Bradshaw announced he would be asking Commander Rocha to join him at the helm; Commander Rocha accepted this promotion to Deputy Fire Chief and retired on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 after 34 years of public service, as the Topeka Fire Department’s Deputy Chief of Fire Operations.
