TOPEKA -- The Topeka Zoo will launch it's first of four Summer Safari Nights at the Zoo this Friday evening, May 27th. The event called "Summer Celebration At The Zoo" will start at 5:30 p.m. and run until 8:00 p.m. Children will be able to participate in a variety of activities including inflatable's, games and more! Live entertainment will feature performances by the Topeka High Drumline as well as music by DJ Matt. In addition, the Fire Department will be available with their fire truck and Heartland Park will have their pace car available for all to see.
Animals at the zoo will also experience some summer fun of their own! The Orangutans will receive "bubble" enrichment, an activity that they enjoy a great deal. In addition, Sunda, the Asian Elephant will play soccer using her "elephant sized soccer ball". Numerous animals will receive icy "beach balls" for treats and zoo guests will experience giraffe feeding for a small fee. A $5 meal special will be available for purchase that will include a hamburger or hot dog, chips and a drink.
"Summer Safari Nights are a collaborative effort between the Topeka Zoo and Friends of the Topeka Zoo", states Brendan Wiley, Zoo Director. "We are pleased to offer this series again this year as it is a great opportunity to experience the zoo during the evening hours when it is a bit cooler and the animals are more active."
The Summer Safari series also offers Friends of the Topeka Zoo an opportunity to reach out to individuals about FOTZ membership. Friends of the Topeka Zoo offers a number of membership levels. A Family Membership, the most popular membership level, is $50 and provides a variety of benefits including FREE admission to the Topeka Zoo for an entire year.
In addition, the FOTZ membership allows 1/2 off admission to over 150 zoos across the country including the Kansas City Zoo, Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha, and Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita. "It is one of the best entertainment investments a family can make and we will be on hand Friday night to sell memberships to those who have an interest in joining our zoo family" states Kate Larison, Executive Director for Friends of the Topeka Zoo.
Summer Safari events will occur the last Friday of the months of May, June, and July with the final event in August serving as a FOTZ Member Appreciation Night. Each event will have a special theme. Regular admission rates will apply. Admission is $5.75 for adults, $4.75 for seniors, and $4.25 for children ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and under and members of the Friends of the Topeka Zoo are FREE.
