LAKE SHAWNEE -- After the excitement of the Great American Royal, BBQ champs can swing by Topeka and sweep up the first available contest points for the 2013 Kansas City BBQ Society season. Word has spread about the contest the weekend after the Royal and our reputation is growing. Local and statewide competitors call “Smoke on the Water” one of the best events they’ve attended. Between the entertainment, the beautiful venue and the outstanding customer service brought to you by Shawnee County Parks & Recreation, several BBQ teams say they turn away other events to attend SOTW.
New activities and a jammed pack schedule highlight the entertainment for the whole family. In addition to adding a Kid’s Q on Friday night, we are also hosting “Savor the Flavor,” a people’s choice contest, where BBQ competitors offer samples to the public and try to entice them to add to their ‘bean’ container. (Bag of beans comes with admission.) We are bringing back the turkey leg eating contest, sponsored by Herman’s Beef and Sausage House of North Topeka and the live entertainment stage. We are excited to announce some great blues bands both Friday night and Saturday all day; Ellie Smith and the Commotions, Shawn Ward and Brothawood.
Onsite the day of the event, we are hosting a motorcycle “Meet & Greet,” the National Guard’s mechanical bull and numerous activities for the whole family. In addition to the meet & greet, motorcyclists are encourage to enter our bike ride for the “Fight against Leukemia.” The ride will consist of visiting Smoke on the Water sponsor sites and returning to the Lake Shawnee Campground. We will also be hosting a benefit breakfast on Saturday morning from 6-10AM to help raise more funds. The Capital City Crushers roller derby team is coming out both days for two mock games. And amazing BBQ will be for sale, Friday from 5 till 10pm, and again Saturday from 10 until 5.
Gates open to the public at 5:00 this Friday, October 12 and 10:00am Saturday, October 13. Admission is $5 per person, children 12 and under free. Admission includes a bag of beans for the Savor the Flavor and a wristband, which can be used both days. Parking is free.
