TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Shawnee County took another big step towards going green this morning with the debut of curbside recycling.

Nearly 42,000 black and blue recycling carts were made available to those already using residential refuse containers.

The recycling pick-up is every other week and on the same day of the week that trash is picked up.

Interim Solid Waste Department Director Tom Vlach emphasized one critical guideline when using the containers.

"The trucks have these pinchers that grab the carts and they'll spread out to 6 feet and grab anything close to it, like a mailbox or another container. We need the spacing so we can grab the containers effectively," said Vlach.
