MAYETTA, Kan. (WIBW) - Students at an area middle school were recognized Tuesday for their "GREAT" efforts to avoid bad decisions.

Royal Valley Middle School held a graduation ceremony for their sixth graders who recently completed the GREAT program, which stands for "Gang Resistance Education and Training."

The students spent 13 weeks learning about other options to gangs, drugs and alcohol. Their school resource officer, John Calvert with the Tribal Police Department, says it also helps them see authorities in a different light, instead of only when they are responding to someone breaking a law.

The GREAT program also talks about bullying, including how students can prevent it and what to do if they see it.
