TOPEKA -- The Topeka Fire Department wishes to remind our citizens of the following information regarding residential open burning within the City of Topeka limits:
Open burning requires an Open Burn permit; issued by the Topeka Fire Department.
To make an online application go to www.topeka.org and click on Doing Business with the City, then click on the Burning Permit link; after you have read the information provided, the opportunity to apply for a permit is available at the bottom, left-side of the page. IF you do not have computer access call 368-4000 and the staff will assist you in making an application online.
Topeka Fire Department Inspectors will conduct on-site inspections of burn piles prior to issuance of Open Burn permits. *NOTE: Burning without a valid permit or during times other than the dates noted for the Open Burning Season may result in your permit being revoked.
IF you are not home the day of the site inspection your permit will be returned to the Topeka Fire Department Administrative Offices, located at 324 SE Jefferson, where it may be picked up Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The Topeka Fire Department is currently into the 2010 summer/fall, Residential Open Burning season which is October 15th – November 30th; after the 30th the next season will not be until April 2011.
During this time period, the open burning of garden debris, brush and tree limbs/branches may be allowed if, the responsible person / persons desiring to conduct such a burn, has obtained an Open Burn Permit from our department.
A person shall not burn during periods when surface wind speed is less than 5 mph or more than 15 mph.
