TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Downtown Topeka is hoping a new project will help bring opportunity and new businesses to the capitol city.

Residents attended an informational meeting Thursday night to learn more about renovating historic properties to create a potential historic district.

A release states consultants have suggested the use of historic tax credits may help drive economic development and increase tourism.

"We want to have the incentives that will help people decide to invest in downtown," said Vince Frye, President and CEO, Downtown Topeka Inc. "We have several things in our toolbox now but this could be another thing that we could add to that. So the more we have, the more opportunities that we can put in front of potential investors and developers."

Guest speakers including Mayor Larry Wolgast and Kansas State Historical Society members were at the meeting to talk with attendees.
