PERRY, Kan. -- America has always been a place of humanitarian action and compassion: A place where people take care of each other whether they are down the block or around the globe. Putting compassion into action is deeply rooted in the American character and the people in Jefferson County are no exception.

Join the American Red Cross for an Open Volunteer Meeting Monday, September 24 at 5:30pm at First State Bank and Trust, 402 Plaza Drive, Perry, KS, to learn more information about volunteering with the American Red Cross. New and current volunteers are both invited to attend this informational meeting and ask questions.

“Although recent hurricanes like Issac make the headlines, many people forget that the day-to-day work of the Red Cross takes place in communities like ours, and is made possible by ‘hometown heroes’ who volunteer their time,” says Deb Tucker, Regional Volunteer Coordinator of the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “Our chapter typically responds to 2-3 house fires every week, and we need volunteers to assist when our neighbors are in need.”

Local volunteers spend hours each year to help local families when disaster strikes; teach their neighbors lifesaving skills such as first aid, CPR and water safety; help local military families communicate during emergencies; and much more.
