TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- The nice weather means more motorcycles on the roads and two serious accidents in two days are reminder for both bikers and car drivers to be aware.

Steven Christensen says he rides his motorcycle to work as often as he can.

"I ride for enjoyment and I ride to get around, but you always have to be aware all the time," says Steven.

Very aware--in the last 2 months, two Kansas motorcyclists died in separate crashes.

On March 31st, Justin Williams of Junction City died when his motorcycle crossed the grass median on Highway 73.

42-year-old Jerry Johnston Junior died after a Friday wreck in which the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says an SUV turned in front of his bike at southwest 29th and Indian Hills Road.

Additionally, a Topeka couple remains with serious injuries in a local hospital after a van turned in front of their motorcycle on K-4 near Northwest 39th Street the next day.

"Well, obviously it is always a tragedy anytime there is an accident involving a fatality. Drivers need to put cell phones down, put the make up down, don't file your nails, put the distractions down," said Lt. Josh Kellerman with the Kansas Highway Patrol .

Kellerman also says drivers should keep a safe distance when driving behind a motorcyclist. He hopes to never have to make another difficult call to families.

"You gotta go break someones heart and tell them that they're loved one has died from an accident and that's one of the most difficult jobs," said Kellerman.

"Its saddening because there is no reason for people to die," said Steven.

Kellerman also said the number of fatalities is actually the lowest its been since 1947 and while it is not illegal to wear a helmet, he advised to always wear one as an added safety measure.
