TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka's newest cafe served up its opening Tuesday.

The Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce joined USD 501 officials to cut the ribbon on the Kanza Cafe. The cafe opened in the district's Kanza Education and Science Park near Hummer Sports Park. The park is on the former Topeka State Hospital Grounds, on SW 6th Street, east of Oakley.

The cafe will provide a chance for students to run a real business. USD 501 Deputy Superintendent for Operations Larry Robbins says students will do all the marketing, advertising, operational and financial aspects of the business.

Robbins says the cafe will complement other learning experiences that have already moved or are soon to build at the park. Those include partnerships with Westar Energy, Stormont Vail HealthCare and Valeo Behavioral Health.

The cafe serves breakfast and lunch and is open to the public from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm.
