MILFORD LAKE, Kan The Geary County Sheriffs Department says recovery efforts to locate Thomas Hedrick continue. Hedrick, was the drowning victim at Milford Lake Tuesday December 24 and still has not been located. Previous attempts had been hampered by unfavorable weather conditions.

Weather conditions should allow recovery efforts to restart Tuesday, New Years Eve.

Thomas Hedrick, 31, was hunting ducks and died after falling through the ice on Milford Lake Tuesday morning, according to the Geary Co. Sheriff's Office.

"This is a terrible tragedy," said Wolf in a statement. "I along with the members of the Geary Co. Sheriff's Department would like everyone to remember the family in your prayers."

Wolf explained that Hedrick had climbed into a engine-less, "makeshift" boat and went out onto the ice covered lake to recover a duck that he and his hunting partner had shot. The wind grabbed the boat and shoved it further from shore where the boat started taking on water.

Hedrick climbed out of the boat and onto an ice sheet. Wolf said the ice was only able to hold him for a short time and he fell through soon after.

Authorities were called to the scene around 7:40 a.m. while Hedrick was stranded on the ice.

Wolf said his department has turned its focus to recovery. He did note, though, that due to the weather and the boat ramps being covered in ice, the search has been suspended until the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks can arrive with a sonar-equipped boat. The Riley Co. Dive Team will also join in the effort.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story identified the man who drowned as Thomas Henrick. The name has been changed to Thomas Hedrick.
