TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Capitol City volunteers were honored with a day of recognition.
Topeka Mayor Larry Wolgast joined twenty other mayors across Kansas to proclaim, the Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service.
Wolgast met with local volunteers from the Americorps and Senior Corps programs at Meadows Elementary School.
300 volunteers from those agencies have given more than 200,000 hours of service to Topeka and Shawnee County.
I always encourage people to volunteer on their own. There are many different agencies that need volunteers and if people can be of help you know it's appreciated," Wolgast.
Wolgast says the day of recognition expands economic opportunity and provides leadership abilities for those who serve.
