TOPEKA -- "A Meal and a Toy" began collecting donations for students at Lundgren Elementary School in the Oakland community the week before Thanksgiving. It seeks to spread holiday cheer by giving each of the 189 students at the Oakland area school a meal and a toy for Christmas.

Last year was the first year for the Meal and a Toy organization, collecting enough money and toys to provide every Lundgren student with a free meal and a toy. (Some told the group members it was the only gift they received last year!) Matt Goodwin of MAT also says it was made possible through a sponsorship with Cici's Pizza and numerous private donors. The organization also raised enough money to donate $1,500 to the Lundgren School, where nine of every ten students families receive financial assistance because of the low household incomes.

This year, A Meal and a Toy would like to surpass last year's success and continue helping students from the Oakland community. Money donations can be made online at www.amealandatoy.org. (See the link here on our 4:00 page.) Other volunteers or companies can register there to help, and anyone can also make donations at any Corefirst Bank and Trust location. Thank you!
