TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas Gov.-elect Sam Brownback's inaugural
events have kicked off with a blood drive in Hays.

Wednesday's event was part of Brownback's effort to promote
community service.

Other inaugural events include repackaging medical supplies
Thursday at a community health center in Pittsburg, and stuffing
backpacks with food for needy children at a Wichita food bank on
Friday.

Brownback himself wasn't in Hays on Wednesday. He was in
Washington for the swearing-in of U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, who's
replacing Brownback in the Senate. But Kansas' next first lady, Mary Brownback, was in Hays to donate blood.

The new governor is scheduled to be sworn in Monday on the south
steps of the Statehouse. Brownback's team has a plan to move the
ceremony indoors if snow threatens the event.
