The Manhattan Public Library welcomed Kansas First Lady Mary Brownback to lead a special storytime in celebration of Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week.

Each year, Kansas libraries promote early literacy during Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week by giving away free books, hosting special storytimes, and planning fun activities to get kids excited about learning to read.

"Well it’s important to be successful in school and life," said Brownback. "Reading is such an important skill and we need to encourage it despite the fact that they play lots of video games or have a lot of electronic toys; we need to encourage the reading."

After the storytime, kids got a chance to play and participate in fun activities like puzzles, mazes, and games.

First Lady Brownback read this year’s book choice “Dog’s Colorful Day” by Emma Dodd.
