TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Dozens of people came together at the Statehouse Thursday, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Governor Sam Brownback led the state's commemoration.

"This march is one of many trails for us," said participant, Patricia Wilson.

Topekan's footsteps symbolized pride, recognition and an honor of a dream.

"For me, it represents all the family members, all the people who fight for slavery, and my ancestors who were Indians," said Wilson.

"He marched for freedom. Let freedom ring!" said Danette King-Douglas, another participant.

Topekans walked from the Kansas Judicial Center to the State Capitol. Once inside, they heard speakers express devotion to the man with a dream.

"Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, with a heart to serve, a heart for change and a heart to lead.." said speaker and President of NCCAP, Kyron Cox.

Attendees say the event is about unity and celebration illustrated by students from Ross Elementary, who ended the celebration with a song.

Martin Luther King Jr. day is the third Monday of January. His actual birthday is January 15th. Dr. King would have been 84 years old this year.
