MANHATTAN -- Her daughter said to forget it, she'd never make it over in time to win a new car.
But that didn't stop Rebecca Beckman. The English Learning teacher of kindergartners through 5th graders at Westwood Elementary in Junction City, hustled away from the local Board of Education meeting to head for the Manhattan car dealership hosting the contest.
Rebecca's daughter, a senior at Junction City High, was being honored as being in the top one-percent of students in the state, as a recipient of the Governor's Scholars awards. Driving her old car into Manhattan, Mrs. Beckman quickly filled out the contest form just before time expired. Dave Lewis, the Little Apple spokesman who also doubles as a county commissioner, announced Rebecca as the winner of the sporty black Toyota Yaris.
When Ralph Hipp asked her if she planned to park her new car and just keep driving her regular car to school, she replied, "No way!" She follows last year's winner, Wendy Lee Howard, as a proud teacher driving a free car, thanks to Tom Holcombe and the LATH dealership.
