Cold Weather Blamed For NE Kansas Power Outage

WESTMORELAND, Kan. (WIBW) - Westar Energy says the cold temperatures were likely a factor in a power outage during Friday's below freezing temperatures.

Westar Energy reported 858 of its Pottawatomie County customers were without power at 8 am.

Due to the outage, the Kaw Valley School District sent students at St. Marys Elementary School and St. Marys Junior/Senior High School home for the day around 9 am.

Westar says a wire came loose from an insulator, causing a short that knocked out the line to the affected customers. They said power was restored by 11 am.

Wichita-area residents also lost power early Friday morning. A couple of issues, including a downed line, caused that outage. Westar said cold weather was a contributing factor. That problem was fixed and power restored by 6 a.m.
