TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers. Stormont-Vail's first "Teen Injury Prevention Expo" aimed to reverse those numbers.
The "Seatbelt Convincer" was among fun activities teens enjoyed, in part to drive home the harsh realities of driving impared or distracted.
Special guest speaker Amanda Umscheid learned first hand the tragic outcome that distracted driving can have on a family. She lost her younger sister to a fatal car crash in 2009, they were exchanging texts right before the accident. Amanda said, "Texting while driving is bigger than anyone can ever imagine. I don't want people to have to go through what my family was put through. If someone can go through a simulator without having to have a real experience than it will be a great opportunity.
Teens who heard took her message to heart, the road needs your full attention.
Highland Park High School student Shayna McCall said "It's just tragic to lose someone you love. Losing a life over a text or just one word even makes you think you should just wait until you are done driving."
