TOPEKA (WIBW) — Helping Hands Humane Society will be hosting Tag Day on Saturday April 5, 2014 from noon to 4:00pm. Is this low cost resource day is open to all pet owners. Low cost rabies vaccinations and microchips will be available. According to the American Humane Association, over 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States every year. Last year, 5,350 stray animals were admitted to Helping Hands Humane Society.
“This annual resource day is just one of the many examples of our commitment to animal welfare in our community,” said Justin Brokar, spokesman for Helping Hands Humane Society.
Rabies vaccinations will be administered by local veterinarians and cost $10.00 each. Microchips will be available at the discounted price of $25.00. To save time in line, the microchip application can be downloaded at www.hhhstopeka.org, completed, and taken to Tag Day. HHHS will register the microchip for the pet owners. City of Topeka Animal Control will also be there with city pet licenses. Nail trims will also be offered for $5.00. Clifford the Big Red Dog will be walking around the shelter greeting visitors and taking photos from 1:00 to 3:00.
“Microchiping your pet is one of the best investments you can make. Only 22 percent of lost dogs that enter a shelter are reunited with their families. The return-to-owner rate for microchipped dogs is 52 percent. For cats, less than 2 percent are reunited with their owners while microchipped cats are reunited 38% of the time. For just $25, you can increase your chances of being reunited with a lost pet by up to 2,000 percent,” Brokar said.
Participants are required to have all dogs on a leash or inside a carrier. Cats are required to be in a carrier. All pets should be well handled by their owners. HHHS officials ask that you not bring vicious dogs or dogs in heat. Tag Day will take place in the Training & Engagement Center at Helping Hands Humane Society located at 5720 SW 21st St. in Topeka. Those attending will need to enter through the west wide of the building.
