Approximately 31 million Americans will kick off the summer travel season as they drive to their holiday destination over the Memorial Day holiday. To avoid car trouble this weekend and throughout the summer, AAA encourages drivers plan ahead and make a quick inspection of their vehicle.

“Many travelers overlook the possibility of car trouble or breaking down on the side of the road before leaving for a trip,” said James R. Hanni, executive vice president at AAA. “However, taking 30 minutes to prepare a vehicle can help drivers avoid breakdowns and other car problems that can interrupt a road trip.”

AAA recommends the following tips to help drivers prepare for road trips over the holiday weekend and throughout the summer:

Check fluid levels. Clean headlights, change the oil, replace windshield wiper blades and make sure fluids are filled to the appropriate level.

Check tire pressure and tire tread, including the spare tire. Proper tire pressure and tread help provide traction and avoid dangerous blow-outs while on the road. Make sure the spare tire is in good condition and is inflated in case it is needed.

Inspect the vehicle’s battery. Car battery terminals should be secure and free of corrosion. AAA members can utilize AAA’s Mobile Battery Service to get their battery tested and, if necessary, replaced. For information on how to get back on-the-go, call the AAA Mobile Battery Service at 800-AAA-HELP (800-222-4357).

Have vehicles inspected by a professional. Drivers should visit a repair facility to ensure their cars are ready for long travels. Consumers can visit one of AAA’s nearly 8,000 Approved Auto Repair facilities for an inspection. To find an approved auto repair shop, visit AAA.com/repair.

Be prepared in case of an emergency. Drivers should carry emergency supplies, such as a car care kit with jumper cables, a tire pressure gauge, flashlight, hazard signs, snacks, water and a charged cell phone.

Drivers who find themselves in need of roadside assistance over the holiday weekend or while on the road this summer can contact AAA by calling 1-800-AAA-HELP, going online to AAA.com/roadsideassistance or downloading the free AAA Roadside iPhone app.
