FROM TPD -- The Topeka Police Department would like to remind citizens that it is illegal to leave their car running when unattended. When temperatures drop, the temptation to let your vehicle warm up is understandable, but in doing so you are not only breaking the law, but putting yourself at risk for a car theft as well.
Criminals look for opportunity, so the Topeka Police Department encourages you to remove the opportunity by only starting and running your vehicle when you are inside of it.
Additional precautions you can take include:
Don't loan your car to a stranger or casual acquaintance.
If you have a garage, use it, and remove the key! If you don't have a garage, park in a driveway instead of the street if possible.
Never leave a spare key in the vehicle.
Keep valuables out of sight, i.e. cellular phones, laptops, backpacks, purses, CDs, valuable clothing, etc. Valuables in plain view are an open invitation for thieves.
