Families Say Goodbye To Departing Kansas Soldiers

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Kansas Guardsmen were honored Monday before being deployed to Afghanistan.

Ryan Kohlman is a Kansas Guardsman and a father of three.

"I love what I do," says Ryan.

His family is proud of all his hard work.

"This is what he does, this is one of the reasons why we love him so much because he is so dedicated," says his wife, Amanda Kohlman.

"Oh yeah, he flies helicopters, yeah so...that's all," says his son Rogan Kohlman.

He joins 45 soldiers of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment of the Kansas National Guard at the Topeka Army Aviation Flight Support Facility who are being deployed to Afghanistan for an aeromedical mission.

"We are honored to send the very best men and women in the National Guard to do that work," says General Lee Tafanelli, the Adjutant General of Kansas.

Even though this is Ryan's third deployment, his family says saying goodbye hasn't gotten any easier.

"It's definitely tougher because we have the baby this time, so it's a little more sad," says Amanda.

"It's probably the hardest part, you know, because you miss so much of their lives, and of them growing up, you can home and its like new little bigger people," says Ryan.

Ryan's family says they will miss him, but they are happy to spend these last few moments together before he leaves.

"It is just a good closure," says Amanda.

Ryan says the mission will consist of providing aeromedical evacuation support to patients needing medical treatment.
