TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The Statehouse atrium became a sanctuary Friday as two officers killed while in service to their community were remembered at the annual Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial service.

Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly were killed while responding to a call of suspicious activity in a Topeka grocery store parking lot.

Gogian and Atherly's names become the 268th and 269th engraved in a stone monument outside the capital.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Attorney General Derek Schmidt spoke during Friday's ceremony.
