TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Expect delays when heading through downtown Topeka in the coming weeks. A nearly $4 million multi-bridge repair project begins on Thursday.

KDOT started to prepare for work along the Polk-Quincy Viaduct and the 3rd and 4th Street bridges on I-70. Crews will be replacing expansion joints, adding overlay, and making bridge pier repairs.

Those repairs will start at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. During that time both directions of the Interstate will be reduced to one lane in each direction around the clock.

Various on and off ramps will be closed during the duration of the project.

Signs will be posted with suggested alternate routes, including taking I-470 around Topeka or using U.S. 75 northbound to U.S> 24 eastbound to K-4 southbound to I-70/KTA.
