EMPORIA — Emporia State University will be closed Monday, January 16th, but that won’t stop the ESU community from honoring slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The day’s events include children’s activities and lunch on campus and a parade from campus to First United Methodist Church in downtown Emporia for an evening meal and community celebration. The evening program includes a vocal selection from the Emporia Camerata Gospel Quintet, directed by Carol Krueger of the ESU music department, and a selection from the Church of the New Covenant Praise and Worship Team directed by Jason Brook, an ESU graduate student and member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee.

Sandra Lassiter, co-pastor of Faith Temple Church in Topeka and also New Life Fellowship, is the speaker for the community celebration. Lassiter, an Emporia State alum, is a retired elementary school principal who earned bachelor’s and administration degrees from Washburn University and a master’s degree in elementary counseling from ESU. Lassiter has a history of service in her community and church, including personal secretary, choir director, Sunday school teacher and evangelist.

From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16, a children’s program will be available in Webb Hall of the renovated Memorial Union. The event is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade and includes lunch.

At 5 p.m., walkers will leave ESU’s Plumb Hall and walk to the church at Eighth Avenue and Merchant Street. A free community dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the church’s lower level.

All events are open to the public. For more information, contact Brooks at (620) 341-5516 or the Rev. Andrew McHenry of First Congregational Church at (620) 342-6854.
