March 25, 2013-The 2012 Kanza Bowl Champion Emporia State football team will open the 2013 season with a pair of Thursday night games as the new schedule was released today. The Hornets will play five of their ten games at home on Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
Emporia State will open the season on Thursday, September 5 at Ft. Hays State. The home team has won the last seven meetings between the Hornets and Tigers.
The home opener will be on Thursday, September 12 against Neb.-Kearney. It will be the first time the Lopers have played in Welch Stadium since October 6, 1990.
The Hornets will travel to Central Oklahoma in week three. Emporia State won 17-7 in their last trip to Edmond during coach Garin Higgins first season in 2007.
Northeastern State will make their first trip to Emporia since the 1990 season when they take on the Hornets in Welch Stadium on September 28.
Emporia State will play at Lincoln on October 5 in Jefferson City, Mo. The Hornets have won both meetings with the Blue Tigers since Lincoln rejoined the MIAA as football playing school in 2011.
The Hornets will celebrate Homecoming on October 12 against Southwest Baptist on the MIAA Network. It will be the seventh time in the last four years Emporia State will be featured on the regional television network and the fourth time Welch Stadium has hosted a television game since 2010. Emporia State has won eight straight games against the Bearcats including Homecoming wins in 2002 and 2003.
Week seven will see the Hornets making their first trip to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood. Emporia State shut out the Lions in their first meeting last season.
With Truman leaving the MIAA, Emporia State was left with an open date on October 26 that was not able to be filled.
The Hornets final road game of the regular season will be at Missouri Western on November 2 in St. Joseph, Mo. The two were selected for the MIAA Network Game of the Week and moved to a Thursday night last season.
Emporia State will begin a two game home stand to end the season on November 9 against Northwest Missouri. It will be the first trip to Welch Stadium for the Bearcats since 2009 after a three year run of meeting in Maryville,Mo.
The Turnpike Tussle will be the final game of the regular season as Washburn travels to Emporia on November 16. The rivalry between the Hornets and Ichabods is the most played active series in Division II history. The Hornets won 55-23 last season to take a 52-51-6 lead in the overall series.
The Hornets resume spring practice on Monday, March 25 and will continue through the spring game on April 20 on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. Practices on Wednesdays and Fridays are being held at 6:30 a.m. with Monday practices at 7:15 p.m.
Emporia State was 10-2 last season, with a 9-2 conference record to finish in second in the MIAA. The Hornets will return 11 starters next season including four players that started at least five games on the offensive line.
