Crime Is Down According To Quarterly Crime Report

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The latest report shows crime is down in the Capital City, and with continued effort, police say the numbers can stay down, according to a quarterly crime report.

Chief of Police Ron MIller and other law enforcement members said that while true crime is higher than what is reported, the violent and property crime rates are down compared to this time last year.

The department has implemented a number of programs to reduce crime, such as the Violent Crimes Unit closely working with the FBI, ATF, ICE and other federal agencies; enforcing school resource programs to prevent truancy; and strengthening the Crime Investigation Division.

Chief Miller said the report is looking positive.

"They have been doing an excellent job at reducing crime. Things are going in the right direction," Miller said. "We need to have the community stay involved. People need to stay involved in protecting their property and working with the police department and neighbors and community groups."

From January to March of 2012, Topeka saw 176 violent crimes happen, compared to 122 violent crimes from January to March of 2013. In those same months of 2012, 1,561 property crimes happened in Topeka, compared to 1,400 in 2013.

The east side of Topeka had more violent and property crime committed than the west side of Topeka. From January to March 2013, 78 violent crimes and 709 property crimes happened in the east side of the city. In those same months in 2013, 44 violent crimes and 691 crimes happened in the west side of the city.

The Topeka Police Department added in the meeting that 25 officers will be sworn in July 7, rounding out the total number of sworn-in officers to 300. The department also has a number of officers in-training.

The department purchased almost 30 new, updated vehicles.
