TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - One Topeka couple was recognized Wednesday for their work in encouraging reading throughout the city.

Kimberly and James Daugherty received the Champion of Character award for bringing what's called the "Little Free Library" movement to Topeka.

The two started the first site in their own front yard.

The project's motto is "take a book, donate a book" and the Daughertys say every day, kids stop at their house to share a good read.

Since the project began, the daughertys and other volunteers have placed 20 libraries in neighborhoods around the city. They are hoping to have a site set up in every Topeka zip code.
