DOWNTOWN TOPEKA -- Downtown Topeka, Inc. and the City of Topeka’s Parks and Recreation Department are co-sponsoring the Doodle It Downtown chalk art competition as part of the Top City Thursday and the Hullabaloo Night Sidewalk Sale events on July 28 in downtown Topeka. The competition will take place along Kansas Avenue downtown.
This is the first year for the event. There are 30 spots for artists 18-years-old and older and their sponsor, plus a children’s portion, too. The cost to sponsor an artist is $30. The sponsors name will be displayed next to the artist as they work.
Adults can check in at noon to start their artwork. All art work needs to be completed by 7:30 p.m. that night for judging and awards. Artists will create their work using chalk on 26 X 40 inch artist’s paper.
Cash awards will be given to the first through third place winners and to those receiving honorable mention.
A kid’s portion will also be available. Youth ages 5 – 17 can register and create their masterpieces for judging. That competition will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
Youth artwork will be displayed after the event at the Cyrus K. Holliday Building, 620 SE Madison, in the lobby. Adult artwork will be displayed at the Tinkham-Veale Upstairs Gallery, 909 ½ S. Kansas Ave., during the First Friday in August.
The art will be sold at a silent auction at the end of August and proceeds will be donated to the Topeka Parks and Recreation Foundation and to Downtown Topeka, Inc.
