MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Riley County police say information they received from a 13 News viewer helped them locate a suspected thief who broke into a Manhattan sporting goods business and got away with thousands of dollars worth of items.

On Monday, December 17, 2012 around 10:30 PM, a burglary occurred at Grand Slam Sports on Fort Riley Boulevard, a store that specializes in baseball and softball equipment.

Police say the suspect broke the front glass door of the business and once inside, took 10 pairs of Mizuno sports shoes worth $450, 70 Miken Demarti baseball bats worth $14,000 and a Mizuno baseball bag worth $50. The total loss was listed at $15,500.

The next morning, the owner of Grand Slam Sports called police when the break-in was discovered.

Security video taken from a nearby business resulted in several notable photos which were released Wednesday. The next day, officials revealed that they were contacted by someone who had seen the pictures during a WIBW broadcast. The viewer was able to identify the suspect and he is now cooperating with detectives.

It is anticipated that a vast majority of the stolen items will be returned, according to police.

The suspect has not yet been arrested so his name is not being released.

Officials would not discuss a motive in the case or why the suspect would want to steal so many baseball bats.

"The RCPD would like to thank the public and especially the media for their assistance in this matter," a press release stated Thursday.
