This week is American Education Week, which celebrates teachers and school staff across the country. And it's certainly getting its deserved attention at the home of the National Teachers Hall of Fame, Emporia State University.

The week's theme, " Raise Your Hand for Student Success," is a call for all Americans to do their part in making public schools great for every child.

Each year during this special week, The National Teachers Hall of Fame hosts its annual auction to raise money for the June Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Annually, five of the nation’s outstanding career teachers are selected and then honored in Washington DC and Emporia with gala celebrations of teaching.

This year’s auction is number 22, and promises to be one of the biggest in history. Over fifty items in the silent auction were on display at the Emporia State Federal Credit Union (at 24th and Industrial) from November 12th to 15th.

The live auction Thursday night will begin at 6:05pm, and will be carried live on radio station KVOE-AM 1400, livestreamed on, and carried live on channel 2, Cable One locally.

Over eighty items will be up for bid during the live auction.

NTHF Executive Director Carol Strickland observes that, “There is something for everyone in this year’s auction, and we hope that people will watch, listen, and bid. Items range from homemade ice cream, catered dinners, fitness packages, autographed items (including a pit crew suit from Emporia’s own Clint Bowyer and a KU basketball) to condo stays in Colorado, Missouri and North Carolina, pampering packages for people, pets, and cars, and everything in-between.”

Strickland, a Hall of Famer herself, inducted 10 years ago, adds, “Emporia and our out-of-town angels have been wonderful year after year to the Hall of Fame, donating exciting items and also participating in the bidding process. We have lots of fun while trying to raise needed funds for the NTHF. Anyone who hasn’t listened to or watched the live auction before is in for a treat. Ron Thomas of KVOE and his crew do a terrific job of keeping the auction going while being entertaining at the same time. We are truly grateful to everyone who makes this auction so successful.”

Photos and lists of items for both the silent and live auction can be found at; printed lists may be obtained from the NTHF office, KVOE Radio, Emporia State Federal Credit Union, the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, Emporia Main Street, and the ESU Memorial Union.

Live auction winning bidders will be notified on the evening of the 21st. All items will need to be paid for and picked up at the Hall of Fame office by December 6th.
