ATCHISON -- Searching for something fun and educational to do this weekend? Check out this 14th Annual Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison Friday and Saturday, July 16th and 17th.
The famed female pilot spent most of her childhood in Atchison, before accomplishing many great pioneering moments in her lifetime. This weekend's festival is a commemoration of her amazing life, and a celebration of the 75th annivesary of a few of her historic feats.
Among the highlights of the weekend is Saturday's luncheon honoring KU's Lynette Woodard, the highest scoring champ in women's basketball history, and the first Harlem Globetrotter! The schedule goes on to include their outdoor contest, LakeFest 2010, featuring country singers Billy Currington, Julianne Hough and Gloriana. The 2K and 8K Fun Run and Walk is just another one of this weekend's featured events.
There's also the Amelia Earhart Car Show and a "Concert in the Sky" fireworks provided by Stellar Fireworks of Wichita. In downtown Atchison, you'll also find many arts and crafts vendors and fun-filled activities for the whole family, from face painting and miniature train rides, to a petting zoo!
