A late night police chase through the streets of Emporia ended suddenly when the suspect's van crashed into a building.
According to police reports, a Lyon Co. Sheriff's Deputy was on routine traffic patrol on Highway 50, west of Emporia, at approximately 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night when he spotted the white van traveling at 78 mph in a 40 mph zone.
The deputy proceeded to stop the van at a nearby Flyin' J convenient store. The van then fled at a high rate of speed.
Officers from the Lyon Co. Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol and Emporia Police Department, chased the van east along 6th Street, before the van finally collided with a building at 6th and Sunnyslope.
Police arrested the driver, Louis Pillay of Topeka. The 27 year-old was charged of Felony Alluding an Office, Aggrevated Battery, and DUI, among various charges. The passenger in the van was not charged.
Both occupants refused treatment at the scene.
