TOPEKA POLICE -- The Topeka Police Department is sponsoring a G.R.E.A.T. Summer Program for Topeka area children who are going into the 8th and 9th grade next school year. The camps can accommodate 30 campers each week. There will be three camps that are one week in length and are being held at the Boys and Girls Club at 27th & Adams and the Law Enforcement Center on Tuesdays, each week of the camp. The first camp is May 24th-May 28th, the second camp is June 7th-June 11th and the third camp is July 19th-July 23rd. Camps run from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. The camp is free of charge and lunch is provided. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation to and from the camp. The Topeka Police Department is able to sponsor this camp through assistance from Glory Days Pizza of Topeka, Capitol Federal Savings and the Boys and Girls Club of Topeka.
Camp activities include an insight to a career in law enforcement, the values of making positive decisions to better ones life, presentations on the K-9 unit with the Topeka Police Department, the Response Team (S.W.A.T.), the Bomb Squad, Detectives, Motorcycles, the KHP Rollover and one on one defensive action tactics.
The campers will meet with Chief of Police Ron Miller, learn about recruiting & hiring of new officers and the training that newly hired recruit officers go through. The campers will learn about equipment officer’s use and their uniforms. Time will be spent on the firearms training simulator and each camper will have the opportunity to participate in the Police Officers Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) that new police applicants go through.
Any child going into the 7th, 8th & 9th grade next school year can apply by going to www.topeka.org and clicking on the police department link then click on Summer Program.
