MANHATTAN -- Saying she wanted to change careers to change young people's lives, Wendy Lee Howard signed on for a teaching job on the west campus of Manhattan High School five years ago.
Her specialty? Reading and English.
Wendy's dedication to her students and her profession landed her behind the wheel of a 2010 Toyota Yaris live on 13 News at 6:00 Tuesday night. As part of Teacher Appreciation Day, WIBW-TV joined with Tom Holcombe at Manhattan's Little Apple Toyota on Seth Child Road for the Toyota giveaway May 4th.
Howard, who had served her country for nearly five years in the U.S. Air Force stationed overseas, also pulled an 18 month stint at Topeka's Goodyear plant before making her move to Manhattan.
Wendy was already in the front row, by the dark blue car, when Dave Lewis announced her name on the news. She said she knew she was going to win the Yaris, and told her relatives and friends to watch her walk up there and grab the keys. Wendy was interested in the idea of letting some of her students go for a spin in her new ride, but told me it's actually against USD 383 District policy for her to do that. Find your own ride, kids!
