Bicyclist Dies in Head-On Collision

A bicycle accident along Lake Shawnee Trail left one woman dead and sent another man to the hospital Thursday evening.

According to reports, 54 year-old Paula Lucas was heading westbound on her bike in the 2900-block of SE 45th around 7:45 p.m. when she collided head-on with another bicyclist, 58 year-old Thomas Heikes.

Emergency crews rushed the pair to the hospital with serious inuries; Ms. Lucas was taken to St. Francis where she died from her injuries and Mr. Heikes went to Stormont-Vail. His condition has not been updated.

Neither of the bicyclists was reportedly wearing a helmet. The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate
