Topeka Police Blow Up Suspicious Package

This morning, Topeka police blew up what they called a suspicious package in a Topeka neighborhood at Eighth Street and Oakley Avenue.

They blew up the package around 11:00 a.m. Hours before, they evacuated nearby neighbors and examined the package with a police robot.

Police got the call around 7:00 a.m. and blocked off the area while they worked to neutralize the package. Police say this particular house has been the scene of previous domestic disputes. In fact, two weeks ago, police say they found another suspicious package here. The previous incidents made the woman living in this home suspect this package was dangerous.

"When the resident woke up, she saw this package in the driveway and she thought it was suspicous. So she gave us a call and that's where we're at today," Sgt. J.P. Anguiano says.

Police say this package contained personal affects. 13 news later learned compact discs and slippers were in the package. Topeka police say they have a suspect in custody. He is charged with violating a "protection from abuse" order.
