On July 19th, 2007 at about 10:20 am the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a passing motorist reporting an injury accident occurring at SW 93rd and Burlingame Road.
Upon arrival Deputies found a 1994 Kenworth dump truck had been traveling west on 93rd Street when a 2003 Ford Focus passenger car, that had been traveling north bound on Burlingame Road, apparently failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of the dump truck.
A female occupant of the Ford Focus was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident. A male occupant of the Ford sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local Topeka hospital. The driver of the dump truck sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the truck was identified as Cecil A. Grist, 67, of Topeka Kansas. The female who died at the scene was identified as Laura D. Hunter, 39, of Carbondale Kansas. The male occupant of the car was identified as Jimmy W. Hunter, 47, of Carbondale Kansas.
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation of this incident by the Kansas Highway Patrol Critical Highway Accident Reconstruction Team and the KHP Motor Carrier Inspection Unit. The Shawnee Heights Fire Department provided support at the scene of the accident.
