Gates to be Honored by Native Sons and Daughters

TOPEKA -- The Wichita East High grad who's worked his way to the top of America's military machine, is coming home to Kansas later this month.

Native Sons and Daughters Chairman John Fager told Ralph Hipp on "13 News at 4" today that Robert Gates has accepted the group's invitation to visit Topeka January 29th. He'll be honored by the group as its Kansan of the Year for 2009. The banquet to honor Gates will be held again this year at the Sunflower Ballroom of the Maner Conference Center. Fager said Gates was thrilled by the recognition, and very pleased to come here to accept it. Some of the previous recipients of the award include Karl Menninger, Gordon Parks, Dean Smith, Bob Dole and Martina McBride.
