Judge Rules Man Should Stand Trial

Print

A judge has ruled that 37 year old Theodore Netherland will stand trial for premeditated first-degree murder in the 1989 death of Karen Estes in Topeka.

In a hearing yesterday, a psychologist said Netherland was not competent to stand trial but a psychiatrist said he was. The 42 year old Estes was stabbed ten times as she left a community center.

District Judge Evelyn Wilson found that Netherland was competent
to stand trial. Her decision won't affect whether Netherland will
use an insanity defense.

Netherland was arrested a year ago after the district attorney's office received two letters that provided new information about the suspect.

A state psychiatrist testified that Netherland had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, but believed that he was competent to stand trial.
