For the first time, the parents of slain Overland Park teenager Kelsey Smith have a face-to-face encounter with the man accused of kidnapping and killing her.

Twenty-six-year-old Edwin Hall made a brief appearance in Johnson County District Court this morning on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated kidnapping.

He's accused of abducting Smith outside a Target store on June second
and strangling her.

Defense lawyer Paul Cramm asked Judge Peter Ruddick to keep Hall in the Johnson County jail until the next hearing, which was set for August 15th.

Kelsey's parents Greg and Missey Smith said it was the first time they have seen Hall face to face, but had no reaction.

Greg Smith said that his thoughts are only on Kelsey.

Ruddick has issued a gag order limiting what lawyers, police and others in the case can discuss with the media.
