On Monday May 21st, 2007 at 11:40 p.m., Topeka Police responded to 1252 SW Lincoln and 1160 SW Lane regarding the two homes being shot at.
Sa’Quena Smith, 20, of Topeka told police that she was sitting outside her house when she heard numerous gunshots. She received a phone call from her brother, Marcus Penrod, who told her that someone had just shot at their mother’s (Brenda Penrod) residence at 1160 S.W. Lane and ran south in the alley.
In that incident, according to Brenda Penrod, she, her son Marcus and several other people were sitting outside on the south side of their house facing Munson when all of a sudden they heard gunshots to the south east in the alley and saw muzzle flashes. Everyone ducked for cover.
After hearing 8-10 gunshots, Brenda Penrod yelled at the subjects. One of the subjects yelled back at her and she and her son recognized the suspect's voice. After receiving the phone call, Sa’Quena started looking in the area and saw a known suspect running south in the alley to the northwest of her home.
She ran inside her house and placed her baby on the floor just before hearing one gunshot outside of her house. A second individual at the home, Michael Llamas, saw a known suspect running down the alley, and said it was the same person who's voice was recognized as yelling at Brenda Penrod in the first shooting.
The shootings were believed to be in retaliation for a police report filed earlier in the week listing the same person as a known suspect. Police were never called by anyone at 1160 SW Lane about the shots fired. Individuals at that location were spoken to as a result of the investigation at 1252 SW Lincoln.
Police continue to investigate the shooting incidents and ask anyone with information to call police detectives at 368-9400 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
