LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) _ The Reverend Jerry Falwell is dead. He was found unconscious in his office today at Liberty University in Virginia. His doctor says the evangelist had an abnormal heart rhythm. Falwell founded the Moral Majority and turned it into a political force. He was 73.
For years, the Reverend Jerry Falwell was the face of the religious right. He credited his Moral Majority with getting millions of conservative voters registered, electing Ronald Reagan and giving Republicans Senate control in 1980. Fellow evangelist Pat Robertson says Falwell was a ``tower of strength'' on moral issues facing the nation.
Senator Sam Brownback today also paid respects to the family of Reverend Jerry Falwell.
"Today, America lost a true spiritual leader and a man of great faith in Jerry Falwell.," said Sen. Brownback. "His great words and actions will never be forgotten by the hundreds of thousands of people around the world that his life has touched. Jerry's moral character and principle will forever be remembered deep within my heart and those whose lives were so blessed to be touched by him."
