Topeka Police ID Man Involved in Wednesday's Bank Robbery/ Suicide

Topeka Police continue to investigate an attempted bank robbery Wednesday that ended tragically. Robert G. Easley, 64, of Larned, Kansas, shot himself after being pulled over by police minutes after he inexplicably left the US Bank on Wannemaker midway through his attempt to rob it.

He had walked into the bank a little after 10 a.m. and handed a teller a note claiming he had a weapon and demanding money. Without waiting for any money, he turned around and left.

Based on bank employees' descriptions of the man's car, Topeka police officers spotted the four-door Buick on Gage and pulled him over into the parking lot of Stormont-Vail West.

While he was stopped, the man shot himself and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police ask that anyone with information call detectives at 368-9400 or call CrimeStoppers at 234-0007.
