KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CBS) -- The man who is a regular customer at the BP gas station in Kansas City, MO, just south of the Zona Rosa shopping district came into the gas station to check his lottery ticket and buy some coffee. He ran it through the machine and employees said his hands started shaking when he learned he matched all the numbers.

"He was shaking. His body. And he couldn't say anything," said the store's clerk, Hanish Kumar.

The man now has $71.5 million reasons why this Christmas will be one he will never forget after winning Wednesday night's Powerball jackpot.

"He's just my regular customer, he came here, he didn't know he won," Kumar said.

The clerk said he sold the man, who works as an auto-mechanic, the lottery ticket and it was nice to see him a Powerball winner.

"For two or three minutes I couldn't say anything. I sold him the ticket and he said thanks for you. He said, ‘I'll come back and that was it,'" Kumar said.

"I'm jealous because I buy all mine here and he won," said another customer, Billy Eades as he chuckled.

The man did come back within an hour.

"He has wife. When he went home he gave it to his wife, the ticket. And he went work," Kumar said. "He's not that old, 40 to 45. He comes every morning and evening. He knows me very well."

KCTV5 asked the clerk if it could have all been a joke, but he said he saw the ticket himself and

checked his machine which printed out a receipt that said, "Your ticket must be claimed at a lottery office."

The BP gas station owner said it's not the first time someone has won big there. He said someone took home $100,000 in the past.

Now Kumar is waiting to see if the customer's good fortune will rub off on him.

"Anything. I don't mind. I am not greedy. Anything," he said of what he's hoping for.

Since the store that sold the winning ticket stands to get a $50,000 check, its owner said he hopes to make the holidays a little brighter for his employees.

"Christmas is over so it will be New Year's bonus," said La Lith Lakanandi.

The Missouri lottery office said there was a winner in Missouri, but they will not announce the location of where the winning ticket was sold until the winner comes forward. They encourage all winners to sign the back of their ticket and put it in a safe place before heading to their office in Jefferson City to claim their prize. They have until June 23, 2014 to come forward.

The winner can either claim the full jackpot in 30-annuity payments over time or take the one lump payment of $39.8 million before taxes.

The winning numbers were 23, 28, 38, 39, 56 and the Powerball number is 32.
