KU players caught up in downtown brawl

Police say they have arrested a man who pointed a gun at a University of Kansas football player in Lawrence last weekend.

The incident is at the center of yet another problem with weekend crowds gathering in the city's downtown area.

Police identify the gunman as 23-year-old Aubrey Gilbert of Lawrence, Kansas. He was not injured when a truck carrying K.U. cornerback Aqib Talib backed into him, and was arrested when he became uncooperative with police.

Police say the gun was pointed at Talib, who was riding with former K.U. football player Mark Simmons as the truck backed out of a parking space toward a crowd.

Officers say they later found the weapon under the seat of a car Gilbert was sitting in.

At one point, as many as 30 people surrounded the truck Talib and Simmons were in and attempted to pull them out.

Mayor Mile Amyx said he had met with Police Chief Ron Olin and City Manager Dave Corliss to discuss the latest downtown trouble.
