LEAWOOD, Kansas - One solution to the culture and political wars that hasn't been tried, according to Rev. Hamilton, is for thinking people of faith to model for the rest of the nation a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral and religious issues that divide us. Rev. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking the truth that lives on both sides of challenging issues.
He says the fundamentalism of the last century is waning. And the liberalism of the past fifty years has jettisoned too much of the historic Christian gospel to take its place. Christianity's next reformation, Hamilton says, will strike a "via media" or middle path between former leaders like Jerry Falwell and John Shelby Spong. He says it will draw upon what's the best of both religious worlds, combining love of scripture with a willingness to seee its humanity and its divinity.
