A Shawnee County jury found 39 year old Theodore Netherland not guilty in the October 1989 slaying of Karen Estes outside Topeka's Hillcrest Community Center.

Estes was stabbed nearly ten times outside the center as she was picking up a videotape from a friend. Her murder had remained unsolved for nearly 20 years. Netherland emerged as a possible suspect two years ago, drawing interest that Estes' murder might be solved.

But jurors did not believe Netherland actually knew whether he was involved in the crime or not, even with admissions made to several people that he was the man who stabbed Estes at the center.
