TOPEKA - A detachment of military historians is heading to Afghanistan later this week to begin its mission of documenting the war there.

The 102nd Military History Detachment of the Kansas Army
National Guard will spend the next year conducting interviews,
gathering documents, taking photos and shooting video that will
become the official record from Afghanistan. The material will be
sent to the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington,
D.C. From there, the items are cataloged in the military history
collection system.

The soldiers have been training at the National Guard's Salina
center and will continue training in July at Fort Benning, Ga.,
before heading to Afghanistan.
